Twitch is the official Android app for the popular streaming platform focused on live streaming. Twitch is where you can access thousands of channels where content creators stream video games, eSports competitions, music sessions, talks, or special live events wherever you are.

Display and resolution options

When you open a live stream, the player offers simple controls adapted to your smartphone screen. The video settings are found by tapping the gear icon, where you can choose the image quality to adjust it to your internet connection. The app allows you to do everything from viewing in "Source" quality to get the maximum resolution when connected to a stable WiFi network to selecting lower resolutions (360p or 480p) if you prefer to save mobile data while traveling or if you are somewhere with poor coverage. In addition, "Automatic" mode dynamically adjusts video sharpness to prevent buffering if your signal quality fluctuates.

Real-time interaction through the chat

One of the most fun parts for users is the interaction with the creators in the chat box. Located at the bottom of the screen, the chat allows you to comment live, use the platform's exclusive emoticons and emotes, or reply to other users' messages while the creator is streaming. If you decide to support a channel financially through integrated subscriptions, the system gives you special badges next to your username and unlocks additional features in the chat to highlight your contributions to the rest of the viewers.

Pop-up window mode

If you want to keep watching a live stream but need to reply to a WhatsApp message or check your emails, the app natively supports Picture-in-Picture (PiP). When you exit the app while a stream is playing, the player automatically minimizes into a small floating window that you can drag anywhere on your device's screen. This allows you to continue watching the stream in a thumbnail and keep the audio playing while you use other apps simultaneously on your Android device.

Stream from a mobile device

The app is not limited to watching other people's streams, it also includes the necessary tools for you to start a live stream yourself from your smartphone. When you press the stream button, the program allows you to activate your device's camera to start a stream, capturing video and audio directly from the street or your bedroom. Additionally, there's a screen capture function that allows you to stream your mobile gameplay by sending the image from your screen directly to your personal channel.

My experience with Twitch

I used Twitch on my smartphone to follow an eSports tournament as it happened. Upon accessing the channel via a 4G network, I noticed some minor stuttering in the video, so I tapped the gear icon to manually lower the resolution to 480p and this maintained smooth playback without consuming excessive amounts of data. Then, I swiped the screen to open the chat and see the community's reactions after an outstanding play. After that, I minimized the app to check my to-do list, and the live stream flawlessly continued playing in a small floating window in the bottom corner of the device. I also linked my Amazon Prime subscription with Twitch Prime, earning a free subscription every month. Finally, I tested the WiFi connection at home with my favorite Fortnite streamer, and "Source" quality meant I could watch everything at 1080p and 60 FPS, the highest quality.

What I liked most about Twitch and what could be improved

· What I liked most: The instant transition to Picture-in-Picture mode when you minimize the app allows you to continue enjoying the live stream while you answer emails or browse other apps.

· What could be improved: The app consumes a lot of battery when you keep the chat open and the video quality at maximum resolution, causing the device to heat up noticeably during prolonged viewing sessions.
